Why We Add Green-Lipped Mussels to Our Recipes

Green-lipped mussels – a shellfish that makes up a portion of each of our three dishes – are one of our favourite ingredients in the Fetchit Kitchen. Not only do they have some great health benefits for humans (including improving symptoms in people with osteoarthritis), they are also highly beneficial for our dogs by helping to reduce joint pain and protect cartilage.

As the mussels are a natural sea-water filter, they retain a huge number of rich nutrients and minerals, including omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, antioxidants, zinc, iodine and copper.

The anti-inflammatory benefits

Most pet owners have an idea of how vital omega-3 fatty acids are to their pet’s health and especially the joints, which is why they use fish oil. While fish oil has only two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), green-lipped mussels have a third one called ETA – which lowers the production of cyclooxygenase, an enzyme with causes inflammation. These natural anti-inflammatory benefits in mussels also result in less pain and more mobility in your dog.

Mussels build health joints

Chondroitin, one of the sugars that make up green-lipped mussels, is an important supplement that strengthens your dog’s joint capsules. There is proven success in dogs with arthritis pain – it works to protect the joint from wear and tear and improves the structure of the supporting cartilage.

To recap, green-lipped mussels offer specific value in the following ways:

  • Reduces joint pain and helps build healthier joints
  • Protects and stimulates the production of cartilage
  • Boosts your pet’s immunity
  • Strengthens the bones
  • Prevents the development of arthritis

We know how important joint protection and health is to our fur babies – and so we designed each of our meals with this important ingredient.
